The seeds for Pure Algae were laid, when we experienced a pull from the industry, that demanded larger quantities of high-quality seaweed and stable production conditions.
Also, we were personally motivated by the desire to connect the dots between the growing focus on sustainable production and having a profitable business. We wanted to prove that sustainability and a thriving business do not have to be mutually exclusive.
Fast forward to today, when Pure Algae’s innovative capture-based technology transforms nitrogen compounds and CO2 from industrial fish-farming and similar industries into a valuable biomass with numerous fields of application.
Our cultivation systems are developed with great concern for the environment. Turning processed water into tons of seaweed makes a significant societal impact, as nitrogen and phosphorous is captured in the process.
This is why we have brought the seaweed production on land; by doing so we enable fish farms to produce more fish, while creating an additional revenue stream - the seaweed.
Our Story
Pure Algae Denmark was founded in 2018 by Esben Rimi Christiansen. The idea behind founding the company comes from a calling to protect the natural resources of the ocean.
Esben demonstrated the positive potential for sea lettuce in public health and within the area of sustainability in his thesis. This became the very first seed for Pure Algae. The rest is history.
The global demand for seaweed is on the rise and Pure Algae’s vision has been to become Denmark’s first supplier of a technology that enables a stable and sustainable production of seaweed on land.
